Diokno to officials: Deliver projects or lose your jobs

Budget Secretary Benjamin Diokno on Friday warned members of the Cabinet and agency heads that they could lose their jobs if they fail to use their budgets and deliver promised projects, after the 2017 national budget was signed into law.

“Ang pressure niyan nasa mga sekretaryo, yung mga kasama ko sa gabinete. Ang sabi ng presidente dyan, ‘Use it or lose it’. Pag binigyan ka ng budget at hindi mo nagastos you’ll lose your job. Hindi yung budget. You’ll lose your job,” Diokno said in an interview on radio DZMM.

On Thursday, President Rodrigo Duterte approved next year’s P3.35-trillion budget—a budget that he said will help him deliver on his promises to fight crime and poverty, and grow the economy.

The education department gets the lion’s share, with more than P544 billion.
Allocations for infrastructure, universal healthcare, agriculture, and social services, among others, have also been increased.

“This budget is a credible budget where every peso will be spent for the gains of the Filipino people. Let us work together to utilize gov’t budget and for the realization of our hopes and aspirations for our country,” Duterte said.

However, the budget has also drawn mixed views from analysts, as some agencies’ gains were due to losses in others–the country’s calamity fund was slashed by more than half, for example.

From P38.9 billion in 2016, the Duterte administration only allocated P15.7 billion for the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Fund, also known as the Calamity Fund.
